Prime Video clearly isn’t ready to let go of the audience that made The Summer I Turned Pretty such a hit. Just as that show wrapped up, it delivered another young adult romance series for the summer crowd: Off Campus.

On paper, it looks like another fluffy college romance built around attractive people and familiar tropes. In reality, there’s far more substance here than the premise suggests.

What Is Off Campus About?

Based on the bestselling Off-Campus novels by Elle Kennedy, the first season adapts the series’ opening book, The Deal.

Set at Briar University, the story follows Hannah Wells (Ella Bright), a music major, and Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli), the star hockey player and team captain. While Hannah and Garrett are the central couple, the show builds a larger ensemble around them.

There’s Hannah’s roommate and best friend Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla), Garrett’s teammates and roommates Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn), John Logan (Antonio Cipriano), and John Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks), along with Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston), Hannah’s longtime crush.

A Familiar Romance Plot Done Surprisingly Well

The basic setup is about as classic as romantic comedies get.

Hannah wants Justin but lacks the confidence to make a move. Garrett needs help passing philosophy class. They strike a deal: Hannah tutors Garrett, and Garrett pretends to be her boyfriend to make Justin jealous. You’ve probably seen variations of this story dozens of times.

What makes Off Campus work isn’t the premise but it’s the execution.

Modern teen dramas often train viewers to expect betrayal, misunderstandings, toxic friendships, and villains lurking around every corner. We’re conditioned to wait for someone to make the worst possible decision.

Off Campus largely refuses to play that game. Instead of manufacturing drama, it focuses on characters who genuinely care about each other. Most conflicts come from personal insecurities, family issues, or emotional baggage rather than people acting irrationally for the sake of a plot twist.

The Refreshing Absence of Manufactured Drama

One of the show’s biggest strengths is how often it avoids the obvious route. There are multiple moments where you expect the story to create unnecessary conflict. Garrett could blame Hannah for not picking up his call. Logan could become jealous and awkward. Justin could easily steal Hannah’s song.

Many teen dramas would turn those moments into season long conflicts. Off Campus doesn’t. The characters are allowed to be decent people.

That doesn’t mean they’re perfect. They all have problems of their own, but the show understands that struggling with something doesn’t automatically make someone cruel to everyone around them. It’s a surprisingly mature perspective for a genre that often thrives on chaos.

Why the Supporting Cast Feels Real

The supporting characters deserve a lot of credit.

Dean is introduced as the stereotypical playboy, yet he consistently gives Garrett good advice and actively roots for Garrett and Hannah’s relationship. The show never treats him as a punchline or forces him into a one-dimensional “jock” stereotype.

Likewise, Kendall, played by Karis Cameron, isn’t reduced to the role of the jealous ex waiting to sabotage the protagonists. Again and again, Off Campus chooses believable character behavior over easy drama. The result is a cast that feels far more authentic than what we’re used to seeing in teen romance series.

The Cast Carries Every Emotional Moment

The performances across the board are strong, but the leads do most of the heavy lifting.

Belmont Cameli and Ella Bright have natural chemistry and make even the quieter scenes engaging.

The standout, though, is Mika Abdalla as Allie Hayes. Every time she appears, she immediately commands attention. She’s funny, confident, chaotic when necessary, and effortlessly entertaining.

That isn’t meant to diminish the rest of the cast. The ensemble works because everyone feels comfortable in their role, which helps Briar University feel like a real place rather than a backdrop for a romance.

Final Verdict: One of the Most Mature Teen Dramas in Years

It’s been weeks since I finished Off Campus, and I still find myself thinking about it.

Yes, it’s steamy. VERY STEAMY.

Yes, the plot is predictable. But predictability isn’t a flaw when the journey is this enjoyable.

What stayed with me wasn’t the fake dating storyline. It was the maturity of the characters, the supportive friendships, and the show’s refusal to create conflict simply because the genre expects it.

You’ll laugh, you’ll get emotionally invested, and by the finale you’ll probably wish there were more episodes waiting.

Rating:

I am giving this a 4.5 out of 5 stars. A near perfect teen drama that proves compelling romance doesn’t require endless toxicity to keep viewers hooked.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a rewatch to start while waiting for Season 2, which is set to focus much more heavily on Allie and Dean.
