Samay Raina is back with India’s Got Latent Season 2, with the first episode dropping on June 20 on both YouTube and Netflix.

Let me start by saying this is not really a review. This is more of an ode to a show that made millions laugh and to a comedian who has experienced the highest highs and lowest lows of show business over the past year and a half.

Ever since Samay announced in his stand up special Still Alive that Latent would return for a second season, fans have been waiting for one thing. Would the show still be as unhinged, raw, and unpredictable as before? Or would it be cleaned up, sanitized, and made safer for a wider audience? After watching Episode 1, I think we finally have our answer.

Latent is still Latent.

The chaos is intact. The awkwardness is intact. The questionable life decisions of contestants are definitely intact. What has changed is the presentation. Samay has clearly become a better editor. But underneath everything, the familiar madness remains.

Samay Raina Returns With Latent Season 2

One thing about India’s Got Latent is that people often end up talking more about the panel than the contestants.

Episode 1 featured Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Ashish Solanki, and the ever reliable Balraj Ghai alongside Samay as they judged performances and roasted anyone unlucky enough to stand in front of them.

The show settles back into its usual rhythm of contestants trying their best, panelists trying not to laugh, and Samay actively making everyone’s lives more difficult.

In other words, business as usual.

The Contestants Who Stole Episode 1

Every season of Latent needs a few standout performances, and Episode 1 delivered.

Sukrut Deo was easily one of the highlights of the episode. His act revolved around playing a drunk shaayar, and he committed to the role so completely that the panel genuinely started questioning whether he was actually drunk.

At one point, Balraj Ghai jokingly asked the bouncers to smell him. Even during the panel interaction, Sukrut stayed in character. He answered questions as the drunken poet and only broke character after repeated requests from the panel. When Alia Bhatt predicted he would go viral, she was not exaggerating.

Then there was Avinash Agarwal.

His Donald Trump impression was so absurdly accurate that there were moments where you genuinely wondered whether you were watching a contestant or a White House press briefing. The voice, mannerisms, confidence, and complete commitment to the bit made it one of the most memorable performances of the episode.

I am not saying he should be worried about future visa applications. I am saying I would not blame him if he was.

Alia Bhatt, Sharvari And The Rest Of The Panel

The panel itself deserves credit.

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari are currently promoting Alpha, which made this appearance a surprisingly risky move. Whether Alia wanted to promote the film or not, appearing on India’s biggest internet show naturally creates publicity. The Alpha hat certainly did not help her defense.

India’s Got Latent has never exactly been known for playing it safe. It is controversial, unpredictable, and often one clip away from becoming the biggest topic on social media.

Alia handled it remarkably well. For years she has been the subject of internet jokes and memes, dating back to the infamous Koffee With Karan moment. At this point, she seems completely comfortable leaning into it. More importantly, she proved to be a genuinely good sport throughout the episode. Her sense of humour was much sharper than many people probably expected.

Sharvari was equally entertaining. Much of her best material came from roasting Samay, which is usually a good strategy because the man practically walks onto his own firing squad every episode.

There is something refreshing about celebrities who can take a joke and fire one right back and both actresses did exactly that.

Ashish Solanki brought exactly what you would expect from one of India’s sharpest comedians. His quick wit and effortless comebacks ensured that he never faded into the background.

Then there is Balraj Ghai. Latent’s resident gentleman. The running joke about Balraj being an absentee father continues to produce laughs. Even the disclaimer reminding viewers that the show is for adults includes a joke about Balraj’s children only getting to see him during the episodes.

Somehow, despite all the madness around him, Balraj still manages to be the show’s anchor.

Has India's Got Latent Lost Its Edge?

At the time of writing, Episode 1 has crossed 10 million views in roughly 5.5 hours. If there were any concerns about whether audiences still cared about Latent, those concerns can probably be retired.

That said, some criticism has already started appearing online. A section of viewers feels the show has lost some of its edge. Others disliked the muted words and felt the first season was more chaotic.

That conversation is inevitable.

Comedy has always been subjective. What one person finds hilarious is another person’s reason to close the tab after five minutes. Personally, I think people sometimes confuse unpredictability with quality. The first season was lightning in a bottle. Recreating that exact feeling was never going to happen.

Season 2 feels different. Not worse… Just Different. The show feels more deliberate. The editing is tighter. The jokes land more consistently. Don’t get me wrong, the chaos still exists. It just feels slightly more controlled.

And that is not a bad thing.

I know this article reads like a love letter to the show, but if the humour does not work for you, there is a simple solution. Criticise it, leave a comment, and move on.

The beauty of comedy is that nobody is forced to laugh.

Final Thoughts

As for Samay Raina, there is very little left to say that has not already been said. He is still sharp. Still witty. Still unfiltered.

The biggest difference is that he appears to understand the game better now, and that maturity shows throughout Season 2. The jokes land. The pacing is stronger. The episode feels more confident.

The Supreme Leader, as his community likes to call him, is back. If Episode 1 is any indication, India’s Got Latent Season 2 is only getting started.

Whether you believe the show has evolved or lost a little of its old edge, one thing is impossible to argue against… 10 million views in a few hours is not nostalgia. It is proof that people still want Latent. And after watching Episode 1, it is pretty easy to understand why.

If you haven’t watched it yet, and somehow belong to the microscopic minority of people who clicked on an article about India’s Got Latent without actually watching India’s Got Latent, first of all, respect. Second, I have conveniently placed the Netflix link here.

And for the true disciples of chaos, the YouTube episode for India’s Got Latent S2 EP1 is down here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go see how many clips from this episode have already invaded my social media feed.
